You can purchase USB copies of the OS from Microsoft’s website now, while USB and DVD versions for other online retailers will launch in mid-August. I’m a bit disappointed since the only way to get the DVD packaging is from B&H Audio and Video; I tend to collect boxed software, and the DVD box looks better. Of course, all OS installations I’ve done have used USB drives for a long time—I even did WinXP installs that way about ten years ago.

Thanks for your quick responses. I'll contact him to check if he can wait and buy Windows 10 when it becomes available. If not, I'll go with Windows 8.1 and hope for the best.
