In my view, pairing Skylake with Win7 works fine. It’s mostly irrelevant since Win10 offers more flexibility and can be customized to closely resemble Win7. The main challenges arise with newer chipsets like Kaby Lake and Ryzen.

People should move away from Windows 7. The claim that 7 and 8 outperform 10 was true for roughly the first nine months. Now Windows 10 has fixed all its problems and is a superior operating system compared to Windows 7 or 8.

However, we discussed that Windows 10 can be adapted to resemble Windows 7. It offers stronger security and better performance. Using version 7 puts you at a clear disadvantage. Updated October 2, 2017 by wkdpaul cleaned up

For reference, Windows 10 can be modified to resemble Windows 7 somewhat. Many privacy concerns exist around Windows 10, which some people avoid... thus Windows 7 remains a reasonable option. Similarly, Linux or macOS are also viable alternatives.

For security purposes, avoid using Windows at all. The main reason Windows 7 might be less secure than Windows 10 is that Microsoft stops updating it. This is why they are discontinuing EMET, which actually enhances Windows 7's security compared to Windows 10.
