I'm preparing to set up Windows 10 on a fresh system. Your current setup needs the key disabled on the old system before installing on the new one.

You can modify your Windows key, but I recommend using a tool to retrieve an old key first. Key finder software is available at https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/, and other options include https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-portable...c-windows/. If needed, you can change the key via https://www.lifewire.com/how-do-i-change...ey-2624930.

Log in to your Microsoft account on the present machine, link the device, and authenticate on the new one to move the license.

The disable key isn't required. Since you got it for free, you likely have a digital license now instead of a product key.

Ensure your license remains connected to your account; otherwise, the existing hardware settings will be reset to the updated configuration. Processing might take some time, and if problems arise, you can find guidance in the help sections on Microsoft or contact their support for assistance.

You can also utilize a tool such as produkey. Retrieve the key from your current PC and input it during Windows installation. If an error occurs, you may need to activate via phone. That should be unnecessary. Edit: incorrect link Updated January 17, 2020 by I7 5820K

The link points to a YouTube video featuring a pink USB device because it showcases a product or demo related to that item, often for marketing or informational purposes.

No, you don't have to turn off the key before installing a new MB in the system.
