Setting up Wi-Fi in our fresh log cabin in the backyard
Hello! We've constructed a cozy log cabin in the yard. It looks great, but we're facing an issue: the Wi-Fi signal doesn't reach the cabin effectively. We need a way to get internet there without spending much. Could a wireless solution work? Maybe by sending the connection directly from our house to the cabin in a simple and affordable way? Thanks ahead!
You can install Ethernet underground, but I’d be concerned about potential issues with signal loss or damage. If you face harsh weather conditions, avoid doing it. Consider using a Wi-Fi extender near the cabin and another inside the cabin close to each other. The exact distances aren’t clear yet.
The Unbiquiti nano beam appears to perform well here. Consider using a fiber or Ethernet cable outdoors, connected to a switch that supports PoE.
Distance values like 100 ft, 200 ft, 300 ft introduce challenges or need extra equipment. Generally, search for "Wifi Repeaters" and explore further options.
The distance is roughly 200 feet. Someone suggested adding an Ethernet cable underground, but they thought it wasn’t needed. I’ve been checking out Ubiquiti products, but I’m not sure which one to choose.
Running a cable underground with a protective cover is fine, but ensure the distance is safe—200 feet might be too long depending on conditions.
They've already renovated our garden, which makes pulling the cable really difficult now. I'm considering point-to-point wireless instead.
When considering expenses, PtP wireless connections can come with a higher price due to extra hardware requirements. The setup is also more intricate and will face the same limitations of wireless technology as in a typical home environment. Running Ethernet over 200 feet is feasible, but a wired connection consistently offers better reliability and performance. It’s also much cheaper than a PtP wireless solution. If you decide to implement Ethernet, I suggest using CAT5e or higher cables with solid shielding, installed underground in a waterproof pipe such as PVC. You’ll need to excavate the ground to ensure it’s deep enough and protected from surface contact. This process can be quite labor-intensive, and depending on your garden layout, you might encounter challenges securing approval. Good luck with your project! It could be a great way to unwind during these times.
