I installed Lubuntu and Mint from a 2.0 Cruzer USB on school computers without issues, though it wasn't the fastest option. A 3.0 version with better speeds would work well for Spotify, but I'd recommend using an HDD instead.

I own an Arch Cinnamon USB that works well when connected via USB. It might be worth testing Manjaro Cinnamon (pre-installed Arch distribution) on a USB drive to check compatibility, since hardware configurations vary.
