With the latest hardware releases I’m considering a upgrade soon. I’m trying to decide the optimal OS configuration for my needs. I work as both an engineer and a data scientist, relying heavily on Windows programs. Linux excels for data science tasks, especially when GPU usage is high. I’ve tried dual booting but found it inconvenient, particularly during model training when program availability was limited. WSL2 with its GPU support seemed ideal, yet performance hasn’t met expectations. SR-IOV appeared promising, but switching GPUs between virtual machines isn’t straightforward—especially since I have an extra GPU from my previous setup. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If anyone has experience with seamless switching between a main PC and a work laptop without many cables, that would be really useful.

Changing the GPU in UnRAID is quite simple. It offers a menu showing the cards available for each VM. I noticed earlier that AMD cards worked better with multiple cards, though that situation seems to have improved recently.

Yes, Unraid can support multiple GPUs on a single virtual machine.

I think so, though I haven't actually tried it before. Right now I'm at the office for 12 hours (that's a lot of rain in Teddy!). I hope someone here can verify before I head back.

GPU adjustments are possible, but typically you must power off the virtual machines. If your applications require the GPU on both sides, a standard dual-boot setup won’t help much—you’d need a second GPU to run them effectively together.

I found an extra GPU from my old system and with Unraid's free trial I can test it right now.
