I purchased an NVMe M.2 case and WD M.2 drive. My goal is to run macOS inside it, then swap in the new WD M.2 with macOS already installed. I’m curious if it’s possible to set up macOS on the internal enclosure using a Windows virtual machine or similar setup. I have Catalina and Big Sur running on my VM machine.

It would be much simpler to just use the MacBook Air and install directly onto the existing drive.

It's feasible to set it up on an external drive if it appears during installation. Just press Command-C to choose the boot device, which works on a MacBook but not on Windows.

There seems to be an issue with my Macbook Air. Every installation is failing on the original SSD since purchase. I made a USB stick, tried installing, but it kept failing over 30 times—different sources, different sticks, even after changing dates. Still managed to install with the same stick, which kept failing. I assumed the SSD was bad, bought a new one with an adapter, but the error persisted. Maybe using the enclosure would work, but I need a backup plan. I’ve never had problems upgrading or installing OS for five of my friends’ Macbooks.
