I have no issue running the Ethernet itself, but I have no idea what to get when it comes to a switch. I found this switch on my local Craiglist: https://providence.craigslist.org/ele/d/...03763.html New In Box Foundry Networks FLS624 - switch - 24 ports - managed Subtype - Gigabit Ethernet Ports - 24 x 10/100/1000 + 4 x shared SFP + 3 x XFP Is this any good to use? It looks like this model was made in 2000 and the company was bought out in 2008..... No idea if that will impact anything at all. Any reason I shouldn't get this? Should I get something newer? Any advise for a first timer?

It depends on the cost. You didn't specify the price. Are you requiring 24 ports? Do you need SFP ports (though they offer no advantage, SFP+ would have been better for 10Gbps) and XFP as well—transceivers are costly and few devices support it?

Oops, missed the chance to share that. It’s really just $30—super affordable. No need for anything else. Maybe someday I’ll have more than 10 ports at home, but anything else would be a bonus.

I'm not sure, but I'd like to learn how to handle a switch using the command line interface.

It turns out an unconfigured managed switch acts like an unmanaged one. I’m a little concerned about the cost, especially with a $30 price tag for a 24G+4 dual personality SFP. That seems quite affordable.

You wish it stays unmanaged so ports remain active without automatic shutdown. You also want no initial setup required to launch it.

I enjoy gaining knowledge, which means I’m probably handling it later. The ad mentions a new version, so I think it’s not set up yet.

I’d begin by checking what’s needed to set it up right away, which often involves a console cable for the particular device. If it’s a brand-new unit, it should include a DB-9 serial to USB adapter. Also, look for a configuration manual for the switch so you can learn the basics and become comfortable with the CLI.

Are you looking for a managed switch? Otherwise, consider purchasing a TP-Link Gigabit switch from Newegg or Amazon for around $20. How many connections do you require?
