Hey there, I’m trying to figure out how to set up a physical firewall for my home network. At work we use a firewall in a small business with multiple VPN licenses, including a Sonic Wall and some WatchGuard models. I’m considering used Sonic Walls or WatchGuard T-10/T-15. Do I need licenses for this setup? I’ve had trouble getting support replies and it’s been a while. Any advice would be super helpful!

They require a different term besides a physical firewall. This suggests a fire-resistant barrier wall.

The idea of SonicWall sales licenses renewed yearly gives me pause. I wish I had more details... sorry.

I usually configure these for my clients, though I thought I understood it well. However, I discovered better opportunities on eBay. I realized it wouldn’t be that easy to just install it and start using it.

It appears you require a subscription for the appliance to function properly, especially for the lower-end versions, which costs approximately $400 per year. Basic features are available without one, though updates and other enhancements are unavailable.

We are testing Meraki gear at the moment; the firewall performs well, but the client VPN isn’t ideal. I’ve researched some options and will likely choose either a Cisco Wireless controller (without firewall) or an ASA device (with firewall) for AnyConnect. This would let employees simply download credentials and connect easily. Currently, I’m not entirely confident—most licenses come with various features enabled. On eBay, I see around $50 for 250 VPN users on perpetual, and some ASA models offer the Security Plus license as perpetual. I haven’t found a solid AnyConnect mobile license yet, so I’ll keep an eye out for a better deal.

It’s simple—construct a wooden barrier and ignite it. Place it around the structures. This approach offers minimal physical effort.

Are you looking for a commercial firewall solution? Open-source options such as PFSense may not meet your requirements.

I agree with this. There are superior options available, such as the one mentioned. If you're only looking for a firewall with VPN features, there are many affordable consumer products. You can also use third-party firmware for additional advanced capabilities.
