i have some old pc components from my own and my girlfriend's machines, and i was thinking about assembling a system for a friend. he has an old laptop with an i3, but he got it cheap, so i was curious if pairing an i7 6700k with a 5500 x8 and 16gb of DDR4 would be sufficient to run some games together. His laptop can't handle anything we play at the moment, like Lethal Company or Palworld.

Hey there,
Absolutely. Nice combo for 1080p gaming. medium settings in anything other than the latest AAA titles. Very capable for e-sport types games too.

because you believe it works well at 1080p, i thought it might be worth trying. i don’t think he’d mind if performance isn’t top-notch in AAA titles, as long as he can still enjoy the games we usually play together.

Yes, he'll be pleased. It isn't the latest technology, but it remains functional.

Absolutely, this should work well, particularly given the adjusted expectations for quality and resolution. Lowering it to 720P would likely be sufficient for most applications.

I tried some games at 1080p and they performed better than expected in medium settings. I'll have him pick it up soon, thanks for all the details!

It's interesting to hear. Thanks for checking in about it. I think the CPU would handle it fine with a better GPU, but it's always good to revive something old and put it back to use.
I've been experimenting with older hardware and currently have a 7th gen i5 paired with a 580, which performs well with almost any slightly older model at 1080/60.
