Setting up a router for 10Gbps fiber connection (Hardware guidance).
I have a friend who aims to boost his internet speed to 10 Gbit/s. He needs help setting up the router. I own an outdated Dell Optiplex 745: CPU is an Intel Core2Duo 2,4 GHz (can upgrade from Intel Core2Duo 1.86 GHz), RAM is 4 GB DDR2 4x1 GB (upgraded from 2 GB), HDD is a 40GB SATA drive (downgraded from 80GB), LAN is a 1 Gbit/s PCI-E x1 card, WAN is 1 Gbit/s on the motherboard. The router has been performing well on his 500/500 Mbps connection. I understand 10 Gbit/s is very fast and many components may struggle with such speeds. Can someone advise on suitable CPU, network cards, and RAM? I’m considering a Ryzen 7 5700G for graphics, possibly a Ryzen 5 4600G or Ryzen 3 4300G if it’s too heavy. Also, he wants a built-in NAS, so I need guidance on that as well. The router will run PFSense or IPFire.
