Setting up a new network connection
Setting up a new network connection
I noticed you were thinking about Ubiquiti from the start. EdgeOS is merely the software running on the ER, accessed just like any regular consumer router—through the webUI at your local IP. UniFi device management must be handled via the UniFi Controller, not EdgeOS, even though the devices connect to the ER. The controller can be installed locally on Windows, a phone app (though controls may be limited), or on a RaspberryPi linked to the network. The easiest option is the Windows version, but always back up your settings in case of issues.
I have some basic networking knowledge but am not an expert. I'm keen to understand more about networking, which is why I chose Ubiquiti. Estimating the coverage of various APs can be tricky because of factors like walls and nearby Wi-Fi signals. Would a 2 UAC AP lite cover roughly 160 square meters across two floors?
Begin with two units. One can be placed between the kitchen and dining area on the ground floor, while the other can be positioned in the hallway between the bedrooms.
That was what I was planning to do. I think the UDM would be a better choice. The UDM would be in the living room and if necessary add an acces point for upstairs. This way I get the controller, firewall router, managed switch, though not Poe, and a great 4x4.MU-MiMO wave 2 radio in a single compact package.
