Locating comparable equipment at this cost isn’t simple, which means you’re getting a solid deal. For fun, where are your Ethernet ports arranged on the floor layout? Where will you install the UDM unit? The UniFi APs, particularly the dish-shaped models, are designed for ceiling installation to ensure optimal signal coverage across expansive spaces. Placing them in a corner adjacent to a wall reduces the effectiveness of the signal spread.

Fair point, but given the current projected location (X marks the spot on his floor plan) it's a better choice, whichever which way you look at it.

The Nano HD is currently the best choice for access. I own some basic models, but they fall short compared to modern requirements.

I can do that. There is a ethernet port in that corner downstairs (my oled is connected there but that should be no problem, wifi wil work fine on that tv). There are no ethernet ports in the hallway upstairs, only in each bedroom. I will update the ground plans tomorrow with the ethernet ports located. Right no I'm on my phone ( nearly bedtime here, 11.30 pm) UDM probably where the X is marked because all the ethernet cables come together right there.

Would the Edgerouter X SPF fit the needs? It offers sufficient POE ports for two APs and a lot of flexibility. You won't need to run the UniFi controller, which shouldn't cause issues. EdgeOS might be a bit more setup-heavy. A setup of Edgerouter X SPF paired with one AP AC lite upstairs and another with AP AC lite upstairs could work well. Would a different Edgerouter be preferable?

This configuration suits my needs because APs are positioned where they’re required. Keeping the UDM in storage would cause half your WiFi signal to be wasted across the garage and front yard. I’m using an ER-X-SFP, but I’ve linked my UAPs to a dedicated UniFi PoE switch. Once we move to a USG and repurpose the ER-X-SFP, EdgeOS remains accessible. The built-in setup wizard simplifies initial configuration. You’ll still need the UniFi controller for full AP setup, but it can be placed on a separate PC or even your mobile device if you avoid investing in CloudKey or RPi controllers. The ER-X-SFP offers passive PoE at 24V compatible with UAP-AC-Lite and LR models. The standard ER-X only supports one PoE pass-through port, which won’t power both UAP-AC-Lites. However, you can still use power injectors for each device if desired. Prices for the other ER models rise sharply after these two, pushing you into the UniFi Switch range—unless you have a specific reason to opt for a more expensive model, it’s best to skip them. If you require extra ports to connect Ethernet to other areas, a basic unmanaged gigabit switch is available from Amazon, including TP-Link and Netgear options under $20.

UniFi and EdgeOS operate independently without any compatibility between them.

You're able to handle Edgerouter through EdgeOS and manage APs via Unifi Controller on a PC. It's also possible to control the APs using EdgeOS itself.
