Hey everyone, I'm not entirely sure if this forum is the best fit for my project. I'm planning to set up a PC solely for server hosting, aiming for better performance than shared web hosting. I'm seeking someone with experience in online hosting and also running their own machines. I'm looking for something affordable right now, focusing on the Intel Xeon E3 1270. I'm worried it might not match the advertised speeds of online solutions that claim to use high-end CPUs like the 10900K, especially since shared servers often lag behind my R5 3600 by about twice. My friends and I are considering launching a new server around the release of 1.18, and we faced lag issues with online hosts during 1.16. I've tried a few alternatives that perform similarly, but I still think a dedicated hosting PC would be the best choice. Thanks in advance!
You'll notice that running a server at 1.16 is challenging due to limited optimizations from Java/Minecraft. Since Minecraft runs on a single core with one thread, prioritizing good IPC and single-core performance is key. If you need newer hardware, an i5-10400 can be bought and paired with budget components. Alternatively, using an i5-3570 with Linux will help make the most of your system's capabilities.
The server is intended solely for you and a few pals. Network should manage it smoothly. Make sure no more than 7 or 8 people are connected at once.
