You should be concerned about static electricity damaging the motherboard. To avoid this, use an anti-static wrist strap and work in a dry environment.

It's not a big deal unless you move the motherboard around on carpet. Also, keep in mind whether your system uses AMD AM4 or an older model—be cautious when taking off the cooler.
