I own an Itronix Gobook IX260 laptop, a somewhat uncommon rugged machine from the early 2000s. It doesn’t have an optical drive or hard disk, both needing special adapters to switch from the motherboard’s ZIF ports to IDE. I haven’t managed to locate suitable replacement cables in six months. The device has PCMCIA slots and USB2.0 ports, though. The PCMCIA port seems like my best bet for getting an operating system, since it will be using IDE. The main issue is that Windows XP setups running from a USB drive don’t recognize the PCMCIA drive I installed. Even though this HDD works on other systems and doesn’t require drivers, it might be flagged as a removable device, preventing installation. Any suggestions on forcing it to boot from this drive?

your windows xp laptop starts from a compactflash card with a known issue about it being marked as removable. you might have used questionable drivers to hide the C: drive, which led to problems. recent searches suggest creating a separate bootable partition using tools like Win9x, DOS, or Gparted so the installer can work properly.
