I recently purchased a Netgear R7800 to replace the unreliable ISP equipment I’ve been using (UK Sky Hub SR102) for years. All my devices and smart home gadgets are now connected via the new router, and I’ve turned off Wi-Fi on the Sky Hub. The next step is setting up port forwarding, which I had configured on the SkyHub but am having difficulty with. Should I disable everything in the SkyHub and just configure the Netgear instead? I’ve tried various settings, but it’s proving difficult to get everything working smoothly. I’ve also assigned static IPs for my Netgear within the SkyHub and a NAS inside the Netgear, yet compatibility issues persist. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you connecting the new Netgear solely as an access point or just as a wireless AP? If configured as an AP, the rules on your Sky Hub should suffice. When both devices act as routers, you’ll need to forward traffic between them and then route it through the Netgear port forwarding to your PC. If you wish to retain the previous setup, I can help narrow it down further.

I configured the new router independently instead of using an access point, ensuring the old router stayed online. The Netgear got IP 192.168.0.99 inside SkyHub, while the Netgear network uses 192.168.1.*. For Remote Desktop, you’d need to forward port 3389 from the SkyHub to 192.168.0.99, though the next steps depend on your setup.

You'd like a guideline for the sky hub to forward traffic to the Netgear setup. The rules should map inbound port 3389 to an outbound IP at 192.168.0.99 on port 3389, and also allow incoming connections from the PC's remote desktop port (3389) to the same IP and port.

I managed it. For some reason, my server labeled the new network as public, stripping away all sharing rights. After changing it to home settings, I followed the steps you mentioned, and everything is now working properly. Thanks!

It worked fine for you. But why was the Netgear set up separately on its own network? Why was the router feature of the Netgear unnecessary here? You're still relying on the SkyHub for everything except Wi-Fi, so it's handling routing and similar tasks. If Wi-Fi was the main issue, I'd recommend converting the Netgear into an access point and connecting it to the same subnet as the rest. If the problem is with routing, I'd check if the SkyHub offers a "modem only" setting.
