Set up macOS on a brand-new hard drive for your Mac Mini 2012
I swapped the hard drive on my 2012 Mac Mini but can't find an installer. I used a Ubuntu live disk and everything worked fine there. But when trying to boot or access internet recovery, nothing appears. I don’t get any video signal from the mini unless I switch it to a Linux drive. This has happened before with other refurbished Macs. Any suggestions? I’ve also tried holding Option while pressing Command R—if you just leave it, with a MacOS installer (Sierra), it might shut down eventually.
Did you attempt pressing Command+Option+R at startup? Also, do you have another Mac and a portable storage device available? You might consider installing macOS onto the external drive, then booting from the Mac Mini and transferring it to the new drive.
