Set up a wireless network area.
Set up a wireless network area.
I aim to give internet access to students in my community by setting up a WI-FI zone. After reviewing many articles, I believe creating a dedicated wireless area will let them connect their phones and laptops from home. I’m seeking guidance on the necessary hardware, system design, network layout, and all the support available to ensure this project succeeds. Appreciate your help!
There are some individuals who have set up ISPs themselves. The simplest method involves a network of wireless transmitters connecting at a central location, similar to how a WISP operates. You connect an internet line to this hub and use wireless signals to reach each home. The main challenges are installing equipment at every residence and paying for business-grade lines, which can be costly since ISPs typically restrict shared residential connections. WiFi works best over short distances and may struggle with interference. Also, ensure you understand the legal implications if any of these setups violate regulations.
The neighborhood is compact with a defined layout, featuring a mix of residential and commercial spaces.
Approximately 400 square kilometers and a nearby airport closer to the coast
This project covers a significant space and a single antenna on your home won't deliver enough coverage. First, consider how much bandwidth you intend to allocate for these users and how many devices will connect simultaneously. It would be wise to reach out to your ISP to check if adjusting your internet plan is possible under your current residential agreement. Some providers may require business-grade services or a tailored solution for such setups.
Additionally, tackling this isn't straightforward once the basics are covered. If you lack experience with complex network configurations and the necessary equipment (like commercial firewalls, switches, specialized APs, etc.), it's recommended to engage a local expert who can provide a detailed quote. While you can explore videos for initial insights, consulting professionals will ensure a more reliable outcome.
If you decide to use Ubiquiti products, the Ubiquiti Community is an excellent resource for guidance.
This could give you a rough understanding. It won’t be inexpensive. You’ll need to locate an ISP offering sufficient bandwidth, as that’s the main expense. After that, consider the costs for gear and setup.
