Set up a SMB share on FreeNAS and connect it to Steam.
I am a new Linux user who is switching my main gaming PC over to Manjaro and I am trying to use my new NAS for my Steam library. Using Smb4k I was able to mount the share so that Steam recognizes it, however it errors out saying that I could not create the Steam directory and that I needs to have executable permissions. So I decided to try and mount it manually but have run into problems. The picture attached is as far as I got. I know I need to mount with -o exec and that I will need to modify the /etc/fstab file so it mounts on boot up, however I would like to know what I’m doing wrong with my command and what is the best way to edit the /etc/fstab file. Thank you.
They suggested using nfs, but I already use it for my Steam share and it functions properly.
Sorry to hear that. I’m really familiar with Linux and have only managed to get OBS and Folding@home running. I couldn’t get -iha working either. I thought SMB would work in Linux with Samba, but it didn’t.
I noticed the issue and created an NFS share on FreeNAS. The share is mounted and remounted at startup, but it isn’t listed in Steam or visible as a device in the file system view. Can you check if there’s a way to make Linux treat this mount point as a device?
Dear Hans, could you clarify how you verified the auto-mount functionality? I’m not very familiar with Steam’s interface. You likely meant the left side of the file explorer. If the network share is properly mounted with the right permissions, you might just need to add the mount point as a bookmark in your explorer. Knowing which file explorer you’re using would be very useful. Before we proceed, ensure everything is configured correctly (fstab and mount permissions). Let us know your progress.
