I've been attempting to set up a server on both Ubuntu and a Raspberry Pi, but no devices connect on the same or different Wi-Fi networks. It seems like the issue might be related to Virgin Media Business (long story) Wifi blocking, as the device assigns a different IP address than what's shown in whatsmyip. I'm unsure which IP to use and neither the port appears open according to any checker, even after opening it. I'm a total beginner and just want to create a simple Paper/modded server, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For internet access, configure dyndns/duckdns. For local connections, run "ip addr" to get the LAN address.

Disconnect from the internet temporarily, then test connectivity locally using the Pi's IP address. From another device on the same network, verify if the ping works.

The Raspberry Pi isn't ideal for running a Minecraft server, especially with mods enabled. Anything altered is likely to freeze quickly under stress. After confirming it works locally, you can proceed with port forwarding—just keep in mind, this is mainly for personal use with close friends.

Thanks for the prompt replies. Unfortunately, I won't be able to test today. I'll try as soon as possible, aiming for tomorrow.

You can connect to the same local network but switch to a different Wi-Fi channel. For your Virgin Media router, you may need to change the port settings or use a VPN to bypass restrictions. Be aware that some providers like Virgin often block certain servers, so checking for workarounds or alternative methods is recommended.

Not familiar with Virgin Media outside the UK. Typically, you adjust the server to use a non-standard port and then forward it through your router. Can you access the router settings?

Unfortunately if your ISP blocks all attempts there's not much you can do. Upload a screenshot of the router settings just to check if you set it up right, and try different port numbers (remember you have to set the port on the Minecraft server as well)
