Sure, the main drawback is the USB bandwidth requirement, though I'm familiar with this setup before and it works fine.

USB drives can be inconsistent; heavy use might cause failure or data loss. Keeping backups is wise.

I'm not familiar with any specific tools for regular cloud backups, but there are options available. Linux can be straightforward if you're comfortable with it, and there are several software solutions designed for daily backups to the cloud.
