Set screen to black and make PC unresponsive when idle.
Hey, I’m facing a problem with my PC. I just installed everything yesterday using fresh parts, and I’m confident the setup was correct. But if I leave it sitting for an hour or more, the screen goes black and I can’t interact with anything. The keyboard lights, mouse, and some components stay lit, but the display turns off completely with no cursor visible. A few notes that might help: 1. My keyboard uses a Razer Huntsman Mini and was set to gaming mode before I powered down (gaming mode disables the Windows key, just in case you press it while playing). After shaking the mouse, I tried turning off gaming mode, but the key stayed white—still enabled. 2. When I shut down normally, there’s usually a short delay (around two seconds) before fans and lights cut out. Since my system has a new SSD, I’m wondering if that could be affecting the shutdown timing. Let me know if these details are useful. Specs: Ryzen 5 5600 RX5600xt (Gigabyte), 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3600mhz, CL18 MSI MAG, B550m, Mortar WIFI, Samsung 970 EVO Plus (1TB).
It seems Windows might be putting the system into sleep mode, which some users can't exit from easily. You could attempt to turn off fast startup, as this often resolves the problem on certain systems. To do this, open Settings (gear icon) from the Start menu, then choose System and select Power & Sleep. Scroll down and click Additional Power Settings, then toggle off "Turn on fast startup." If you don’t want to change this setting, you can also disable sleep mode altogether.
Additionally, there was a potential RAM compatibility problem that caused a blank screen after several cold restarts. My machine also struggled to wake from sleep mode, but after replacing the RAM a few days ago, the issue seems resolved—though it’s still early to confirm. It’s possible this was linked to the sleep-wake failure, but that’s uncertain.
