Server setup on Ubuntu is halted during startup.
I've been attempting to start a clean installation of Ubuntu Server 22.04.1 on my Lenovo Thinkcentre M73 Tiny 10AY using a new Crucial MX500 1 TB SATA SSD. After installing the OS and removing the USB installer, I've used the GNU Grub menu to boot and it freezes at the "[OK] Reached Target Local Encrypted Volumes" prompt. I've experimented with various online tips: enabling nomodeset in grub, testing different BIOS versions, adjusting RAM settings, turning off Secure Boot in BIOS, and ensuring SATA is set to AHCI. I also tried installing Ubuntu Server 22.10, which froze on boot but at a different message. Previously, an older Ubuntu version worked fine with a failing SSD. I've attached a screenshot of the freezing moment during boot. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It seems you're facing difficulties starting a fresh Ubuntu Server 22.04.1 installation on your Lenovo Thinkcentre M73 Tiny. You've already attempted several fixes like enabling the nomodeset option in GRUB, testing various BIOS versions, swapping RAM modules, and adjusting Secure Boot and SATA settings. You also tried installing Ubuntu Server 22.10 but the problem continues. The booting halts at the line "Reached target local encrypted volumes." To resolve this, verify the installation media for any issues, review the boot logs for errors, and inspect hardware connections. If these steps don't work, consider reinstalling Ubuntu using a clean copy of the installation disk and adhering to the setup process carefully.
I've reinstalled it multiple times and adjusted the USB installer each time. Despite that, the computer remains unresponsive. Every freeze triggers the fan to speed up briefly before returning to normal. I also ran diagnostics using the Lenovo tool, which confirmed everything was working correctly.
I’m encountering similar issues. My Lenovo Thinkcentre M73 stopped booting after installing Ubuntu Server, even though the hardware remains intact. The installation image now freezes at a specific stage—possibly during "Target Server Time Set" or "setting font." I suspect one of the partitions deleted during Linux installation might be required by firmware (perhaps graphics-related), causing a mid-boot failure. I’m considering restoring those partitions or disabling advanced graphics settings in Ubuntu. [1] https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/ht103653 [2] This seems to align with advice from AskUbuntu, though I can’t navigate the Grub menu directly.
The issue arose because the Compatibility Support Module was turned off in the bios settings. Re-enabling it resolved the problem. Hope this helps!
Hello! Your suggestion helped a lot. I also faced a similar problem with my ThinkCentre M73. Thanks for the tip, even though I had the opposite configuration settings. It finally enabled the "CSM" feature, which was surprising but helpful. You're right to point it out—I appreciate your guidance! After updating Ubuntu Server 22.04, the boot log stopped showing any login prompts and now runs smoothly.
