I would likely suggest using a Raspberry Pi. I own one and it hosts a Minecraft server. With suitable software, you can definitely establish a secure connection to your server. I’m unfamiliar with the setup. An interesting option is a plugin from https://playit.gg/. It provides a free domain that players can use to join your server. I only have the free tier, but there’s a paid version available at almost no cost. Hope this helps and good luck!
