Server RAM
Server RAM
Hello! I plan to purchase a R710 soon and am exploring server options to find the best and most suitable components. As you're aware, RAM sizes and speeds vary, and I see several choices: PC3L-8500R (~1066 MHz), PC3L-10600R (~1333 MHz), PC3L-12800R (~1600 MHz), and PC3L-14900R (~1866 MHz). The price difference between 1866 MHz and 1066 MHz should be around 40%. I looked online for comparisons, but the results mostly confirm my expectations—higher frequency generally means better performance. However, how much improvement is real? Does anyone have benchmarks or data to help compare the most affordable versus the priciest options? I understand in gaming gains are usually close to 1%, but I want to know if this matters for servers too.
Home Lab: I’m exploring various setups like pi-hole, DNS servers, Plex, Freenas/Samba, a Minecraft server, and a gaming VM. I plan to start with 4x4GB RAM and expand later. On eBay I found r710 units mostly with 1333 MHz, which isn’t great value—300$ is better than buying locally. My local seller provides detailed info quickly, unlike some CTO servers that take months to respond. Do you think changing the network frequency from 1000MHz to 1600MHz affects server performance?
