currently using windows 10, previously tried linux distros. i have two machines—a laptop for file sharing via phone—and i’m planning to switch fully to linux. the dual boot setup isn’t working well, so i want my server on the main pc. anyone has performance benchmarks for gaming with a setup like mine? could it slow things down? how much would it cost? TL;DR: should the file server run on the same machine as your gaming rig?

I mostly play certain types of games, but the only issue I have is frame drops in CS:GO. I don’t mind high variability. My question is, has anyone with a game PC running on their system ever tested benchmarks with the server running versus without?

Don't run gaming and server software together on the same machine. If it's a server, use it only for that task.

I followed your request closely. I fully switched to Linux by moving the gaming PC from Windows 10 to Pop!_OS some time back. It serves as a home server for hosting Emby, Pi-Hole, Resilio Sync, SSH, Cup, and Transmission. As a server it runs lightly, so I can't confirm any gaming performance drops, though I’d expect similar frame rates as on Windows. I mainly play Overwatch and see 120-130fps in Pop!_OS with Lutris, which is impressive. My hardware includes Pop!_OS 19.04, AMD Ryzen 3700X, 16GB RAM, 1TB NVMe main drive, and 2TB NVMe storage, plus a Nvidia GTX1080.
