You're thinking about setting up a budget server around $250. I found some affordable CPUs that could handle a Minecraft server for four players. The older Alibaba Xeons might still work, but you should check their specs carefully. It's a good idea to weigh the cost against your needs before deciding.

Sure, that sounds manageable. Running it alongside games and tasks is straightforward. Just increase RAM based on the number of players and mods. The CPU should handle it well.

The MC server setup is mostly single-threaded, yet you can manage it with a Chinese X99 setup if you restrict it to four users.

A vanilla server is quite straightforward to set up. Minecraft servers tend to run on single-core systems, so good performance on one core is ideal. Xeons aren't ideal for this purpose. These servers can work on various hardware, including Raspberry Pis. When choosing a machine, think about your future plans. If you only need basic hosting, a compact desktop model with a decent CPU or one that supports upgrades works well—they’re quiet and unobtrusive. For more advanced setups like Plex or NAS, consider a full desktop chassis for extra storage options. You could also explore Aternos, which provides free hosting, though it offers only moderate performance. It might be a good option if you're just starting with a simple vanilla server for four players.

Consider investigating SQL servers and potentially operating other game servers later. You may also store files there for backup purposes.

A big SSD might suffice for that purpose, keeping USFF systems as an alternative. You could also choose an SFF setup offering more room and internal connections (PCIe slots, SATA ports, etc.), they remain fairly compact compared to a full desktop tower, and you can get them reasonably priced with an i5 8500 or 9500 that should meet your requirements.

The 9100f looks promising with several attractive offers. What do you think about these opportunities?

CPU performance is decent but integrated graphics are likely better; avoid Intel F CPUs unless you have a specific need. Purchasing a complete system is usually more cost-effective than building it yourself, and buying from eBay ensures compatibility of components.

Even my PowerEdge 2950 III equipped with two Xeon E5420 processors (same generation as Core2 Quad Q9000 series), 32GB DDR2 memory, and two 15K RPM SAS HDDs in RAID 0 handled a server for 50 players with minimal impact on TPS. That setup also supported around 50 plugins and multiple worlds. This was about ten years ago, yet I still believe a modest MC server could run smoothly on an LGA2011-3 Xeon without problems. These chips are significantly more capable than the older LGA771 Xeons I previously used.

I’d also like a well-designed computer (it will be placed under my desk) and it would be great to gain more hands-on experience assembling PCs.
