I just reopened the discussion after seeing it was previously closed. Here’s a fresh take on your needs. I’m looking for a reliable operating system suitable for an all-round server. My choices are: Linux distribution, Windows Server 2012 (offered by university for two years), or FreeNAS and Windows Server Small Business. The main goals are backups, a mail server, and supporting various services like DNS, Minecraft, a build server, FTP, and Wake On LAN. Since downtime must be minimal, I want something stable and robust. Your reference document links to some setup details—check the left side for parts. If you have any suggestions, let me know which applications or packages would help with backups and overall performance. Thanks!

Create a UNC share on the server similar to Windows settings. Use Genie Timeline on clients for backups. If switching to Windows, replace ADDS with Exchange and emails accordingly.

You're looking for a way for the server to automatically back up data from all computers. Bacula is one option, but you should verify its compatibility and features before proceeding.

It seems the server can't directly retrieve backups from the computer. You might manage shares on the computer and use the box to copy files, though automating this is tricky. Windows Home Server offers a simpler setup with built-in tools like HMail for email. I don’t see a reason Bacula wouldn’t work either—I haven’t tried it yet.

That's sufficient. Just mention something like "Linux? Never heard of it. Also, I hate learning new things."

I'm using xubuntu on my laptop with Plex and TS3 running in the background.
