Server connection failed. DNS server unavailable.
I had spent several years using the internet in Ohio, originally with WoW. It was acquired by Breezeline (BL). The main challenge was needing yearly maintenance to maintain a solid connection. Eventually, I invested in my own modem/router setup to cut costs. It functioned for around nine months before failing. The problem stemmed from the Wi-Fi signal weakening significantly on the 5.0 channel. I didn’t use the devices excessively and only needed them for basic tasks. Still, it was frustrating. Later, I purchased an Arris Surfboard AX3000 before the acquisition. Following the buyout, there were months of service issues and work being done on the lines. BL consistently offered rebates and refunds for poor performance. About eight months ago, things stabilized, and then I upgraded to a 1Gbps connection. Around five weeks ago, I started experiencing intermittent connectivity problems—network seemed okay but I couldn’t stay online or get fast speeds. Then, roughly three weeks back, the issues escalated to complete internet failure. The router displayed green lights, yet I remained disconnected. Windows reported the same DNS connection error. This has been a recurring issue despite multiple attempts to resolve it. I’ve looked for guidance online and found some steps, like clearing the DNS, but resetting the modem or PC didn’t help much. Even after trying those fixes, the problem persisted. I’ve contacted Google and most support channels, but they mostly pointed to router faults. I’ve bought two routers in the past year both failed, which adds to my concern. Given the price constraints (under $275 USD), I’m looking for a reliable option under $275 that supports Wi-Fi but not Bluetooth. If that’s not feasible, renting might be the only solution. My budget and needs are tight, so I’m weighing options carefully. This situation is becoming increasingly annoying and stressful."
I faced a comparable problem a while back, with some days smooth and others full of that frustrating 'DNS server not responding' issue while my modem stayed green. The ISP technician checked their equipment and everything worked out. It turned out the old modem was only a few months old and wasn’t the most affordable option. Eventually, I decided to rent one instead of trying to fix it myself. The tech said it was resolved quickly, and since troubleshooting didn’t lead to another solution, I went with the rental. If you’re in a tight spot, I’d definitely try the ISP’s rented unit—it’s a solid backup.
I realized that was an available choice. I’ll configure it and test it tomorrow. Regarding IPv6, I haven’t found any options yet. Could you share one if you know of it? I’ll attempt another search but it’s challenging when results keep pointing to 8.8.8.8 even after adding -IPv4. EDIT: I discovered it. It took me a moment to think straight. It’s late and I’m tired of this hassle, lol. Thanks for the guidance. I hope this works in the near future. If not, I’ll need an alternative solution.
I have come back. I tried to follow the guidance I had. 1.) I adjusted the adapter settings for IPv4/IPv6 using specific DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4/2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844. 2.) I modified my router’s configuration to employ the same DNS providers. I expected this would resolve the connectivity problems. This morning I was online for roughly an hour before my browser ceased functioning. Although the error wasn’t identical, it indicated the DNS server was unreachable. I managed to revert the settings back to defaults without success. I turned off and then turned on the device through the network menu, which resolved the connection issues. I’m starting to suspect the Ethernet port might be the culprit. I updated the driver earlier this month, but the problems persisted before that. I still can’t pinpoint the exact cause. If the issue lies with my router, a $275 US repair is likely. If it’s the Ethernet port, it could cost around $25 US. Could there be a way to identify which one is responsible? I’m open to swapping in a new network card if needed. If my assessment is correct, replacing the NIC would be necessary. My router’s performance is disappointing, but I’m making progress. Thank you for your advice.
Connection failed. Ping tests show issues consistently. Modem responses are returning errors. The /ping command isn’t producing clear results.
Are there any other devices linked to the network you'd like to test? If you can reach the DNS server with a ping, you confirm it's your machine. Otherwise, it's further along the chain. If nothing passes through, checking the device temperature would be next. Those combined units tend to overheat and cause service interruptions. Back in my day with the SB8200, I fixed a fan attachment to the side and powered it directly from the wall. I also faced similar issues on an Archer C7 router, which was resolved using a budget USB cooling pad for the laptop. Both situations resulted in crashes that looked similar. A rare concern is ISP blocking alternative DNS servers, but that's unlikely.
