I am moving into the Dorms this fall and I am concerned about my security on the schools networks. It would be really easy just to plug in a switch to the Ethernet jack and use that for network connectivity, but it doesn't give me the control I'd like over devices such as Raspberry pi's and other computer builds. I'm curious for any relatively inexpensive solutions to maintain the control over my devices LAN. One thing to note is that I'm not planning on hosting any WiFi network, my intentions are really only meant for Ethernet. I'd appreciate any input! *Edit* I'd also like to mention that a system that would allow me to configure VPN routing outside of the University would be a plus but not really necessary as I can do per-device VPN when it comes down to it. I also am looking for all solutions, not anything in particular. If ya'll have a solution that doesn't even require additional gear or anything fancy at all, I'm all ears.

Review the dorm guidelines closely—many restrictions apply to Ethernet ports. When I was in dorms, I used an old laptop as a VPN router. I enabled the VPN software and then installed virtualization tools to set up a virtual NIC. This NIC was connected to a switch via a USB adapter, making it appear as a laptop with a VPN and running virtual machines. The setup was fully wired, preventing access through wireless hotspots.

It wasn't a bad idea at all—I checked the dorm rules and didn’t find any mention of routers, though I’ll double-check. Setting this up could be a cool project! I’ll dig a bit more. Thanks!

I think I'll stick with a standard router. Most of them allow VPN support so all the network can connect securely.
