I'll assist a friend in setting up a PC for gaming. He needs a system that leverages extra cores, aiming for a configuration of 5950x. Since he's not very technical, I'm considering installing an Ak360 and running it at normal speeds without overclocking. Regarding the motherboard, I'm worried about BIOS updates and compatibility with an older AMD CPU. Also, what are the options for CPU power connectors—should I choose a board with 8-pin or 8-pin plus 4-pin?

The additional pins become relevant only when using liquid nitrogen cooling or running multiple GPUs on an MSI board. When selecting a motherboard, consider more than just BIOS updates—ensure it hasn’t been unused for years. Regarding performance needs, ask about USB ports, peripherals, and your budget. Aesthetics aren’t crucial unless you’re particular. The number of drives and their types matter too. My concern is the B550 model with extra features; it’s overpriced despite its solid specs compared to alternatives like the Taichi or Steel Legend. If cost matters, the B550 Steel Legend offers good value at a lower price, though it lacks BIOS flashback support. The MSI B550-A Pro provides decent rear I/O and debug features, making it a reliable choice for less technical builds.

The only thing is my old PC; the current media player was a rock; and I thought their software wasn't great. That's why I'm a bit critical of them. If you could suggest a solid 550 board for troubleshooting from companies like Gigabyte or Asus, it would be really helpful.

If you choose a Gigabyte board, the most affordable choice would be either the B550 Vision or B550 Master, both priced around $250-300 and offering comparable features to the Taichi. The Taichi remains a solid option, though the Master has an unusual feature set and isn't ideal for many users. For ASUS, their offerings are less competitive, with the Strix B550-E being the only budget model at about $300 and lacking the same capabilities as the Taichi. MSI provides decent alternatives in the Unify series, with the B550 Unify X standing out for overclocking support, though it's still pricier than the Taichi. ASRock's software quality is average, their Windows tools often don't function well, and their BIOS varies significantly across models. The Asus supports SLi while the Asrock doesn’t. Performance with memory is solid on the Asus, nothing seems off. I remember what BZ mentioned about the XE, but I managed to beat him in that area using my B-Die. The boards are decent, though they come at a higher price. Still, you end up with some nice options.

Aka it's here in the driver you can use it but we will never ever touch it again kinda deal As for the board you said. It's fine but expensive. You can get a tomahawk max form msi and it's just as good of a board for a good bit less.
