Hello, I'm setting up a new system. I'm planning to purchase a Ryzen 7 5800X3D but I'm uncertain about the motherboard choice. I don't intend to overclock the CPU; instead, I'll rely on the built-in AMD PBO for boost performance. I intend to use Dark Rock Pro 4 for cooling and consider overclocking slightly higher than the stock 4.5GHz. The main challenge is finding a suitable motherboard. There are pricing issues and limited availability in my country. I was thinking of the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite (around 200-250€) because of positive reviews and solid power delivery, but it's currently out of stock everywhere. I found a deal on an Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero for -330€. For my requirements, would the Dark Hero be sufficient, or should I opt for a more affordable option like the B550 motherboard (about 150-200€)? The Asus ROG Strix B550-A is around 155€. Any suggestions or advice on this?
For new builds, skip the 5800x3d configuration. Consider the 13600/13700 Intel series or the 7700x/7800x3d arrangement.
the feature of the 5800x3d is that it's secured—you can't push it beyond a certain limit without using a curve optimizer to lower its voltage. from what i've heard, some msi and asus boards now have a CO tool built into their bios. i'm using PBO2 tuner to apply a -30 CO offset. it's important to note that this chip tends to get warmer because the additional VCache is placed on top of the die, which helps with heat but adds thermal resistance. i've tried various coolers and consistently kept my chip between 80-90°C during heavy use. right now, i'm planning to wait for the 7800x3d if you're sticking with an x3d processor.
The clock speed is being boosted but you’ll likely end up around 105 unless you upgrade to Gen3 or 2 PCIe. That should still support 4.7G, which matches Zen3’s peak before it needs extreme voltage increases. It might be easier to set all cores to 4.5G instead.
It's a positive response from everyone. I've considered this before sharing it. The main issue is that the processor isn't available yet. The MSRP is 500$, but since I'm from Bosnia, the selling price could be higher—perhaps 700-750€ more or less. While the R7 5800x3d costs around 325€, AM5 motherboards are also quite costly here due to DDR5 support.
I'm not a dedicated gamer; I mainly play low-end FPS games like CS:GO and Valorant, and occasionally some AAA titles that require more power. I wouldn't invest much in upgrading unless I have a separate gaming PC. My plan is to build a system with the R7 5800x3d now, use it for a couple of years or more, then sell it for an AM5 platform. That's why I'm searching for a good motherboard. I just found out about this.
I'm still unsure about the Dark Rock Pro 4's ability to keep up with the R7 5800x3d. The R7 7800x3d should probably overheat it, especially if it runs hotter.
There seems to be some confusion about the specifications you're considering. The 7700x is a high-end processor, and its price would likely differ from x670 or B650 models. Performance options around 5800x3D are available, but overclocking might not be worth it for the stock clocks. Focus on the higher-end models if you want to stay within the premium range.
Check my settings. I use a B650 board with the 7700x chipset. With a PBO offset of -30, I run at 5.45GHz all-core and 5.65GHz single-core. These B650 boards perform just as well as the Z670 ones; the main differences come from Gen 5 features. Some claim the X670 VRMs will help with future upgrades. If the AM5 line expands like AM4, that could be true. However, the B450 models can handle a 5800x3d, so I expect a B650 to support a 9800x3d in a few years. Still, I’ll likely build something new. I’m not convinced by the “upgrade hype” spreading everywhere. I might consider the 7800X3D, but for now the 7700X meets my needs well at 1440p Ultra Wide.
