You're considering PC options and need guidance on Windows versions. With Windows 10 launching soon, it's wise to weigh the pros and cons of Windows 8 versus Windows 7.

Windows 10 isn't arriving soon—it might take several months, possibly over a year. I favor Windows 8.1 over Windows 7; there aren't any real benefits for me with the latter. You might consider a traditional startup option.

I run Windows 7 but plan to switch to Windows 10 this spring. Several family members use Windows 8.1, and I think it’s a good idea since more programs now support it.

Why avoid the Windows 10 preview? It's free, which lets you allocate more funds to other parts. After the preview, Windows 10 will need to be replaced; you can buy a full version then. If you prefer not to try out experimental software or want to be an early adopter, go with Windows 8.1—it runs faster than Windows 7 and, if you configure it carefully (as most people do), you can start directly from the desktop and skip modern interfaces. Also, don't rely on the price guide; many, including me, disagree with Linus's component selections in that video. Check the forum comments on this site instead of YouTube, where some constructive feedback about building a better system was shared.

I prefer Windows 7 since I like it more, but Windows 8.1/10 would be better if you need maximum performance—they run faster and use less system resources. Maybe I can stick with 7 right now and upgrade to 10 when it becomes available.

You can also try a Linux distribution (I suggest Mint) to observe how Windows 10 performs.

Powered by Windows 10, though it's not fully completed yet—best to wait until 10 is available.
