I need some advice on picking a motherboard and cooler for my Ryzen 5 5600X. I'm in Norway, so prices are about 25% higher due to customs. My budget is around $1000 USD or roughly 10,000 NOK, even though my actual limit is $1200 USD. My old rig from 2012/2013 had a GTX 780 and 16GB DDR3 RAM, which was top-notch back then. I upgraded mainly because my 100GB SSD kept losing space—sometimes it showed up empty or full. The games I play are mostly from the GTA 5 era, so my old card should handle them fine. I’m mainly looking for a better upgrade for everyday tasks and schoolwork.
Here’s what I’m considering:
- Motherboard: I think a B550 chipset would suit me. I’m not sure if the TUF B550-Pro or PRIME B550-Plus is better, but I want something quiet.
- Cooler: I’m aiming for a quieter option. I’ve heard Noctua makes good ones, like the NH-U9S.

Start with the stock cooler—it's sufficient. You won't need to invest heavily in a separate one. Test it for a while; if it doesn't suit, consider upgrading.
Some motherboards allow BIOS updates without a CPU or RAM installed. This model includes both Wi-Fi and the option to update BIOS without the CPU.
You don’t need a PSU if it functions properly. For saving on NVMe drives, I purchased two units and am happy with them. After a three-month return, Komplett assisted quickly and replaced the faulty one without any cost. The subsequent replacement and additional drive have performed excellently.
I believe all 500 series gigabyte boards have bios flashback capability, though availability differs by model. Pick one and check the official site; if bios flashback isn't listed prominently, it probably doesn’t support it. The u9s seem costly compared to the u12s? If u12s are back in stock at a lower price, go for that. Otherwise, use the included cooler.
