I believe seamless roaming depends mainly on the AP software and hardware, as long as APs operate in router mode the roaming features should function regardless of router settings. This holds especially true for ASUS mesh devices that offer built-in roaming support even when set to AP mode. Client devices play a role too—if the server supports AP roaming standards but requires client behavior or specific protocols, the outcome hinges on the device itself. The only cases where AP side functionality is fully independent are those with dedicated AP features like low signal thresholds or automatic channel switching between 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. If your router brand matches your APs, you’ll need to check how much reliance there is on the router for these functions. Personally, I use an Ubiquiti Edgerouter-X alongside an ASUS ZenWifi Mini AX mesh system because it’s affordable and avoids complex BYO setups. My configuration leans heavily on the proprietary roaming assistance in my APs.
