I’ve begun playing Cities: Skylines once more and need some guidance. The city isn’t on the brink of failure, but improvements are welcome. Traffic patterns currently average around 73%–74%, which is decent, but I’d like to address some bottlenecks and create a smoother highway network. Additionally, I’d appreciate a strategy for future city growth and a more polished visual style. Thanks for your help as an experienced builder!

congestion presents a challenge I find engaging. i design wide slipway intersections throughout the heart of my city, yet still encounter bottlenecks at specific locations. to tackle this, i aim for greater spacing between busy roads so that long distances exist between crossings, and avoid concentrated entry points by distributing vehicle flow across multiple signalized areas. regarding growth: implementing highway-style ring roads connecting neighborhoods is my preferred approach. expansion efforts also focus on areas that align with my goals—such as a waterfront for renewable energy generation, industrial resources like oil, additional highway access for those ringroads, and rail connections to ease freight traffic. this strategy helps alleviate congestion while keeping the city functional. i prioritize grids over aesthetics, as efficient cities are often less visually appealing.

Understand the oddities of traffic patterns in the game. Here you focus on mechanics rather than realism. For instance, avoid placing close junctions on both narrow and wide roads. I’d consider adding some river crossings. If everything makes sense, a full loop seems necessary? The metro offers some relief. Make sure there’s sufficient capacity and think about expanding routes. A simple way to improve the visuals: add lots of trees!
