I’m starting with my current setup: a Ryzen 5 3600 processor, stock CPU fan, an MSI Performance Gaming Micro-ATX motherboard (B450M Gaming Plus), 2x16 Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3600MHz C18 RAM sticks, 2x500GB Samsung SATA III 860 Pro storage, a GTX1060 GPU, and an Acer XF250Q monitor. I’m planning to upgrade the motherboard to something newer with better wireless options—specifically looking for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 support. My VR headset relies heavily on Bluetooth connectivity for my Sony XM4, so a stable connection is essential. The current board is about three years old, which isn’t ideal, but it’s not a major issue. I’m not looking to waste time searching online; I want expert guidance to help me choose the right upgrade without risking a poor experience.
You simply receive a WiFi/Bluetooth module in the card. If your motherboard is in good shape, upgrading isn't usually necessary. It includes PCIe ports for extra input and capabilities. You can install one for around $40, placing it in the bottom PCIe slot on your board. To get Wifi6 and the newest Bluetooth you’d need to check the latest B550 and x570 chipset releases. Engineers usually build these boards months ahead, taking certain onboard components into account. However, if your motherboard isn’t ideal, it still works well with your current CPU. If wireless is your main concern, it’s cheaper to buy a PCI-E wireless card and install it in an available slot. You can find similar cards on Amazon and eBay for 30-40 dollars, though they’re mostly interchangeable—just different Intel-made cards on PCI-E boards that include antenna connectors. The only variations are the quality of antennas inside each box.
I made a mistake by searching for Wifi 6 PCIe first. I thought Google would be reliable, but I ended up picking one of their suggested options.
