Seeking recommendations for a CPU upgrade
Seeking recommendations for a CPU upgrade
Hello, I’m planning to upgrade my CPU since my current Intel Core i5-7600 is limiting my GPU performance. The issue becomes clear when I play Fortnite or GTA V—CPU usage reaches 100% and causes stuttering or low frame rates. At that point the GPU only runs at 30-40%. Upgrading should help maintain around 144fps in Fortnite, letting me use my monitor at full 144Hz without issues. I built the system in 2017 for CSGO but switched to other games over time. While I’m writing this, I’m also considering asking more questions. I currently have a monitor with an AOC G2460PF and some screen tearing problems in Fortnite and Kovaak’s game. I’m not sure how to fix the tearing, but I’ll let you know if you need more details. I also have 16GB of RAM and an MSI motherboard.
You can turn on Gsync by linking the monitor to the graphics card using DisplayPort on both ends. This setup is quite costly, and switching to a new platform might be the most practical option.
Recommend considering a B450+2600 or 3600 instead of an i7 upgrade. Maintain current RAM, and adjust clock speed slightly if it falls outside the recommended range.
Hello, I’m not necessarily aiming for an i7 upgrade. I just need a more powerful CPU that can match the GPU performance. Of course, if the B450+2600 or 3600 remains the most affordable and effective choice, that’s fine too. Your comment might suggest you’re thinking of a direct upgrade, but I’m not sure about the details. I don’t have much tech experience, so thanks for clarifying—I’ll check out the AMD options.
Hi, thank you for your message. I really appreciate you clarifying your situation. I was a bit confused about starting on a new platform and didn’t mean to misunderstand your request. Regarding upgrading the CPU, I’m not aiming for an i7 specifically—I just want to ensure the processor can keep up with the system. Perhaps an i5 or even an i3 would work better? Let me know if you’d like more details!
The asking prices I noticed for the I5 seem unrealistic, aren't there actual buyers paying that much for this chip? The prices for a mainboard plus CPU are roughly comparable to a new Ryzen 5 3600 with a B450M motherboard. See what I said before.
Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware of the price difference between Intel and AMD CPUs. Appreciate the clarification and have a nice evening!
Sure, it looks like you're confirming that AMD remains a solid choice whether you're upgrading to an i7 or another processor. Thanks for clarifying!
Others have mentioned similar points about the B450 + R5 setup. I’m not sure if your current board allows overclocking; if not, the best way to boost performance would be switching to an i7. If it does support overclocking, you might consider an unlocked i5—though even then, those units aren’t cheap and remain relatively costly despite having a low core and thread count.
