Trying to install Windows 11 on my laptop with lost data. Updates via Windows Update, USB, and the official tool failed. Looking into built-in or registry fixes. Paid solutions are fine too. Remembering my dad had an 8th-gen Intel laptop that supports Windows 11—he replaced the HDD with an SSD and upgraded RAM. I connected the old HDD and new SSD to a Steam Deck, copied the drive using Linux’s dd tool. The laptop runs but updates still don’t work. I suspect something might have blocked Windows 11 from installing. I still have the old HDD—any thoughts on moving everything over? Paid tools are also acceptable. Let me know if this helps!

put the old hard drive back into the computer, then upgrade to version 11, and finally move the data to the SSD.

It seems the update might have been more than a year old, so I should upload extra files. Perhaps I can just record the new files on the SSD and transfer them via USB.

If the upgrade isn't working, the simplest option is to back up the data and begin from scratch at zero. Verify whether the TPM is active. If an update is available, it should already be enabled. It's wiser to start over rather than risk running into problems when upgrading from version 10 to 11.

Use free Macrium Reflect to duplicate data from the HDD to the SSD. Execute the setup.exe file for the Windows 11 installation via CMD, applying the "/product server" option to skip upgrade verification.
