Seeking guidance regarding a new computer buy!
I’m planning to transition from a desktop computer to a laptop to utilize my Xbox’s HDMI output when I move into my girlfriend’s home – a significant change! As I primarily game on my console, I lack extensive experience with current PC gaming specifications. My desktop is typically used for streaming, browsing the internet, and managing game libraries through Steam and Origin, with a strong emphasis on Sega Saturn emulation. I'm also interested in exploring PS2 emulation and possibly playing titles like *Fallout 3* or *New Vegas*.
I'm seeking guidance on the following:
1. Should I remain with Windows 7 or upgrade to Windows 10? Considering my intended games – largely emulated titles such as *Shining Force 3* and some PS2 classics – which operating system would provide the best performance? Specifically, do emulators run more efficiently on Windows 10 compared to Windows 7? My concern is that Windows 10 might consume excessive processing power.
2. My budget ranges from £200 to £300, and I’m aiming for a laptop capable of smoothly running the *Command & Conquer* series at maximum settings (including *Red Alert 3*). What specifications would you recommend to achieve this? I’m finding that gaming laptops often seem excessively powerful for my needs, despite a desire to stream in 1080p quality and enjoy smooth video playback.
My initial considerations are:
* RAM – 8GB (is this sufficient?)
* CPU – Intel i5 with a clock speed of 3 GHz?
* Graphics – Do I absolutely require a dedicated graphics card for these games?
I’m also considering purchasing refurbished models – have any of you encountered negative experiences with refurbished laptops?
Thank you in advance for your insights and advice – I’m finding the decision-making process challenging as it's been a long time since I actively engaged with PC gaming and want to avoid unnecessary expenses.
This financial allocation appears inadequate. Could you provide links to common UK retailers, allowing us to compare costs for a suitable computer considering the available screen size? It may be challenging to locate an appropriate machine with such a limited display.
