Hey there, I’m about to change my SSDs in my laptop and stumbled upon something odd. My previous SSD had a silver finish and a tiny plate (probably a heatsink) attached. Now I’m not sure what to do when swapping everything around. My current setup: Old SSD (Intel SSDPEKNU512GZ, PCIe 3.0) with the silver cover and heatsink in slot 1, and the new SSD (WD Blue SN580 1TB, PCIe 4.0) in slot 2 without the heatsink. My questions: Should I put the old SSD (with cover) in slot 2? Is it better to install the new SSD in slot 1 with cover and no heatsink? Do I need a heatsink for the new one? I’ve attached some photos for reference. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Placing an M.2 without a heatsink isn't advised for gaming setups as it may slow down the drive and lead to problems later. Getting a heatsink is the best choice to avoid issues. In most gaming PCs, fans usually handle cooling for the CPU, RAM, and M.2 together, so extra heatsinks aren't typically necessary. If you have any questions or need further help, just let me know!

To fit the new SSD in the PCIe 4 slot, you should purchase a laptop SSD heatsink first. The protective cover for the new SSD is typically included with the drive, so you won’t need an additional one.

If you skip the heatsink, leaving out the cover could trap heat inside, potentially raising the NVME temperature. Typically, the cover keeps the heatsink in place, though it may not be very stable if the laptop moves. Consider your typical usage—benchmarks show high temps, but real-world performance varies. A thin heatsink might work if it stays within safe limits, just ensure it doesn’t block the laptop’s bottom cover.

Thanks for your message. I spent some time experimenting with my laptop, and the SSD operates at a comfortable 40°C under typical usage (CS2, Elden Ring). I believe the cover exists mainly to provide a surface for the antistatic film, which helps prevent static buildup. If I put the old SSD with the cover in another slot, should I reapply the film? Is the film still effective? Would I need to purchase new black film? Am I overreacting?
