Seeking alternatives for CPU and motherboard options
Hello, I'm a computer science student planning to refresh my setup. I currently have an Intel i7-5820K with 32 GB DDR4 and a GTX 970. My motherboard has caused several problems, so I’m considering a replacement. I want to upgrade my CPU later without buying one that fits my existing CPU socket. I run Windows 10 Pro and Ubuntu, spend time coding, gaming, and doing some light game dev. As a student, I have limited funds and need recommendations for a good CPU/motherboard pair. Also, most of my issues stem from graphics card sag and motherboard flexing—strong PCIe ports and solid board construction are essential. What advice do you have? Looking forward to getting the 3080 when I can afford it.
I aim to stay within a budget of $600 or less, though if that feels tight I may need to delay. I prefer the cheaper option, but I still hope for an improvement.
You're thinking clearly about the situation. The 5820k seems to have some gaps in certain areas. If you're purchasing now, consider a 3700x or B550 board. You might also reuse the RAM if its frequency is under 3000MHz. If you have time, check what AMD has planned for their next generation.
We need to expect an update within the coming two weeks, which suggests roughly another month before you can obtain it.
