Next week I’ll begin my new remote IT position, requiring faster connections than my current T-mobile 5G 2 plan can offer. I intend to switch ISPs and upgrade hardware significantly soon, but for now I’m looking for a sub-$50 router recommendation. With just moved in and starting this role, my budget is very limited, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What speeds are you experiencing now? It seems T-mobile didn’t provide a router designed to limit your connection. Their help center mentions that 5G users should see between 33 and 182 Mb/s. If you fall within that range, replacing the router probably won’t boost performance, since it’s just delivering 5G data.

They have a fixed gateway setup with no flexibility—no extra equipment can be added. The gateway also doesn’t allow bridge mode. Speed guarantees for home internet aren’t reliable, especially during high traffic times; congestion can cause delays or packet loss. They don’t promise fast connections and may even slow things down if the network is busy. Home traffic usually gets lower priority than other services on their T Mobile network.

The setup is confirmed. You have T-Mobile internet with a fully required connection. The hardware must be used exactly as provided; you need the original equipment only. A separate router can be added after the main unit, but there is no bridge functionality available.

Thanks for the update, it seems I’ll have to change my ISPs sooner than expected. Right now I’m experiencing around 45 downloads and 35 uploads, but the main problem is that connecting several devices causes a significant slowdown. Looking at other comments suggests switching from T mobile might be necessary for better performance.

I suspect either your signal is weak or your connection isn’t strong enough for reliable service. In my room I see around two bars, and I’m only about 0.25 miles from the nearest tower—turns out it’s a 5G site, but my phone doesn’t connect. That’s why I haven’t tried T Mobile internet; honestly, we’d really like to tell Comcast to stop being so annoying.
