Hey there, friends! I've been putting aside money over the last few months to refresh my PC. The current setup is fine, but the motherboard keeps giving me headaches. Otherwise, it's okay—it could run a bit longer if needed. It comes with an i7 8700K, 32 GB DDR4, and an RTX 2080 Super. I'm thinking about a core upgrade and will add CPU, RAM, then pick a GPU later. My main concerns are: what’s best for gaming, streaming, or recording? Should I stick with Intel or go AMD? I heard the latest Intel models feel more like updates than full new lines, so should I wait for the 15th gen? As for AMD, I’m not sure how things are going. I want solid performance without flashy features—just reliable speed and good storage. I’m focusing on DDR5 memory and the newest SSDs. Need advice on CPU choice and a suitable motherboard. Thanks for your help!

AMD is dominating the CPU scene for gamers, with the 7800X3D being one of the top choices available today. Plus, it handles heat at just a third of the 13 or 14900K models and costs a fraction of the price.

Consider the 7800X3D for gaming, but the 14700 suits productivity or mixed tasks better. Streaming and recording aren’t typically heavy unless you edit a lot, which can still engage the graphics card. Unless you do extensive editing, it’s unlikely to justify changing. AMD chips tend to be simpler to handle and cool compared to Intel ones, mainly due to lower power use, though 13600K/14600K work with a good air cooler. Gaming demands are lighter, so you can opt for fewer resources. Check reviews first and decide based on your workload.

I'll opt for a robust cooler for the CPU, like the NH-D15. It seems AMD is the better choice based on what I've seen so far. Regarding the motherboard, my current model is a Z370 Aorus Gaming 7, but I'm concerned about its reliability and the poor support from the manufacturer. I'm hesitant to stick with Gigabyte at this point.

Peak performance assassin offers better worth depending on your needs. The key distinctions lie in PCI-E 5.0 support (on graphics or M.2), VRM/heatsink quality, M.2 slot count, audio jacks and codec clarity, plus USB ports and types. Premium models include Thunderbolt, USB 4, 10Gb LAN, Wi-Fi 7, fast charging, and DP over USB Type-C. The B650 Tomahawk provides three M.2 slots with PCI-E 4.0 and solid audio codec featuring rear SPDIF and five jacks. TUF B650-Plus offers three M.2 slots (one PCI-E 5.0) while the B650E-F Strix is among the most affordable with PCI-E 5.0 graphics. The TUF A620-Pro delivers a good balance with two M.2 slots, five audio jacks, and a USB Type-C port on the back.

I own the Z370 AORUS Gaming 5 and really enjoy it. It runs smoothly without problems and maintains stable XMP settings. Their RMA team acted quickly when I had my 1080Ti issue back then. Actually, I prefer Gigabyte boards more than most, which is why I’m recommending the B650 AORUS Pro AX for your 7800X3D.

You're asking about Peerless Assassin 120 SE. It seems to be well-received by Gamers Nexus. It appears unavailable in my region, but I might find it elsewhere within the EU. Appreciate the suggestion. No requirement for Wi-Fi since the case is bulky and this machine isn't designed for portability. Skip the fancy DAC as well—I also intend to purchase a standalone unit with an amplifier, which pairs nicely with my Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro headphones. No need for Thunderbolt either. I don’t have any other devices to connect it to. I’m looking for DDR5 support and compatibility with 5th generation NVMe drives. From what I know, the motherboard I currently use limits SSD speeds because the lane is shared with other parts (technical details unclear). My goal is maximum performance on both RAM and SSD. It’s possible I was unlucky with this model; I’m not sure. Generally, it started having trouble shutting down properly at some point. I’ve posted a thread about this issue—feel free to review it. Additionally, USB ports sometimes stay powered after shutdown even though they’re not set up for that.

TUF B650-Plus appears to be a suitable choice. The ASRock B650 Pro RS includes a PCIe 5.0 M.2 port, but only three audio jacks, which might be relevant for your streaming or recording needs.

Here’s a revised version of your message:

Thank you for your assistance. Currently, I have the following items: TUF B650-Plus - 202 EUR Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5 6400MHz, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D - 454.06 EUR, and Noctua NH-D15 - 103 EUR. The total comes to approximately 915 EUR, which is significantly under the planned budget of around 1200 EUR. Your suggestions were very helpful. I hope I can locate the cooler you mentioned and further reduce the cost, though it seems unlikely. It appears these parts aren’t available in my area at all.

Is this an EXPO kit? I ask because 6400 is usually Intel XMP, whereas 6000 and below tend to be EXPO.
