Seeking a dark fantasy RPG featuring an expansive open world.
I’m looking for a game that fits a medieval RPG vibe with open world elements and sandbox freedom. I’ve been unable to play games that focus on the current era, as they’re dominated by chaotic creatures, dragons, and flashy visuals. I want something grounded in realism, not fantasy absurdity. I appreciate Mass Effect for its believable science and tech, even if it’s set in a distant future. Thanks for considering my request.
Have you explored the Mount & Blade lineup? Warband might suit you, and Bannerlord would be even more appealing whenever it launches. Another title worth considering is Kingdom Come Deliverance, which is slated for release this year. I committed to getting a copy early, and while it’s resource-intensive, it should improve with final tweaks—keep an eye out for that one when it drops.
Have you explored For Honor? There was another highly realistic medieval sword game as well that I’m not sure about... or maybe I’m mixing up For Honor with something else. EDIT: @arbellason55 mentioned Mount & Blade: Bannerlord, but I don’t know its release date.
Black death resembles a game but it's no longer active, believe me. Only a few players online and it's an MMO. I heard positive reviews about Kingdom Come Deliverance a year ago. Otherwise, Witcher 3 or Skyrim come to mind, though they include magic elements. Honor might be worth considering, but it doesn't offer open world or sandbox features. You'll find medieval warfare options like Stronghold Crusader and Crusader 2, which are solid RTS experiences. The medieval genre has limited options at the moment.
In Witcher 3 and Warband, I own Mount & Blade: Warband, but it doesn’t add much value. It feels really bad quality, and the cost should be just one euro instead of thirty.
Witcher 3. It's exactly what you're looking for. medieval times, spells and magic don't really affect realism that much, great story, best open world, etc.
Mount&Blade offers more than just visuals, sound, or plot—it delivers an immersive medieval sandbox experience. You can explore as a rogue with a crew, lead a faction, support your nation’s cause, or rule as a monarch while facing global challenges. It’s not designed for everyone, but for those who appreciate its depth, it’s a rewarding choice.
