Hey everyone, I'm using an Intel i5 9400F with a GTX 1660 and 32GB DDR4 3200. I keep hitting CPU limits and want to upgrade within the same socket without breaking the bank—around $400. Got any suggestions?
When you have an i9 9900K, it’s the only one that matches your socket. You might be able to find them at a lower price right now.
Is this your only experience with struggling to view black text on a dark grey, almost black background? Your setup includes an i9 9900K and a more efficient cooler. The i7 8700K (6 cores, 12 threads) and i7 9700K (8 cores, 8 threads) wouldn’t offer much improvement.
On a $400 budget, I’d opt for a Core i5 12400 paired with a B660 board such as the MSI Pro B660M-A. It offers performance comparable to the 9900K for multicore tasks and even better single-core results. If you need it on the same socket, the 9900(K)(F) is the best upgrade choice.
With a $400 budget, you might want to reconsider what you're aiming for in an upgrade. When you mention "I'm running into a bottleneck," it could mean a fps stutter, instability at your refresh rate, or even a balance issue between CPU and GPU performance. A small GPU hiccup here and there won't hurt much, especially if you're still achieving your target frame rate. It's tough to say that a 8400F and 1660 are major performance blockers unless they directly interfere with each other.
