I need a new router or modem for several tasks. I’ll get AT&T fiber soon and am considering rackmount options for installing a VPN like Proton VPN. I want DNS over HTTPS support and prefer affordable, open solutions without subscription restrictions.

The AT&T Gateway is essential to use. Unlike Docsis Cable internet where you can purchase your own modem, Fiber internet doesn’t allow that flexibility. The AT&T Gateway offers an IP pass-through feature that essentially disables the router part. When choosing a router, focus on its NAT performance since that determines the speed of your connection. The key metrics to check are WAN to LAN (download) and LAN to WAN (upload) speeds through ports. Most consumer routers don’t list these details. For slower connections, you shouldn’t run into problems, especially when moving to Gigabit or higher speeds.
