Linux enjoys a significantly lower market presence, which means fewer malware programs are developed specifically for it. Still, threats remain present. Treat it as any standard computer and avoid downloading suspicious files. For network protection, consider using a PiHole and either create or purchase a firewall that leverages machine learning on traffic patterns. Many available options are unreliable, and support is limited, but you could assemble a basic solution with a Raspberry Pi for under $40 in a day.

It might not be necessary to install antivirus on Linux because most software comes from trusted sources. However, some useful network security options exist, such as GlassWire, OpenNMS, PortMaster, and Picosnitch. OpenNMS is the most popular but sometimes causes DNS issues that slow traffic even when allowing everything. PortMaster offers a better interface and is newer, though it has minor glitches on Linux and doesn’t work well with containerized apps. Picosnitch is the latest and performs better at detecting threats, but lacks firewall features and a graphical interface.
