You could try a more powerful router, perhaps a pfsense box, but you may not get a noticable difference. You'd only notice if the attack is right in between 160 and 500mb. Any larger and you installed extra equipment for no reason. The Pi outside the NAT is interesting; it'd have it's own IP address and wouldn't do anything. Or it would become the router, but in that case the pi would have to be faster than the router that you already have for it to work. Thing with ddos attacks is, there are mechanisms you can build to make them less bad, but the only way of actually mitigating them is simply having a f*ckload of throughput, either one insane connection, or a cluster of many smaller ones. The reality of it is, it's very easy for someone to scale up their attack to 500+ mb (if it isn't 500+ already) and so your efforts would be useless. It's not a battle you'll win with a home internet connection. If this is kind of a passion project, and you just kinda like screwing around, that's great, so do I. Just don't spend too much of your savings on it
